Understanding patient and consumer experience We specialize in studies about the experiences of patients and their families and other consumers. Our interest is in understanding patients’ perceptions of their needs, their views on treatment effects, and meaningful changes in a disease state. This research provides essential information to guide pharmaceutical companies in developing and testing treatments.

Generating data to inform patient-reported outcomes (PRO) Our qualitative studies have contributed to the creation and evaluation of PRO measures. We apply qualitative methods to assist researchers in identifying areas to be included in PROs and investigate respondent interpretations of measurement items to improve the wording.

Understanding health behaviors and healthcare choices We have conducted studies on topics including patient decision-making, end-of-life care, treatment choices, and sexual function, among others.

Evaluation of healthcare and health education programs Our work in this area includes the implementation and evaluation of community and school-based interventions targeting the prevention of cardiovascular disease, smoking cessation, cancer screening, HIV/AIDS, and intimate partner violence. More recent efforts concern patient education related to genetic testing.
